The Pilates Studio opened its doors in Den Haag in 1994. It was the first Pilates studio in the Benelux. A second studio was opened in Rotterdam in 2000. The Pilates Studio has grown to become the only teacher certification centre providing instruction in the pure Pilates method in Europe. The Studio instructors teach at the Dance Academy Rotterdam, The Royal Conservatorium in Den Haag, Danceworks in Rotterdam and various other organisations.
The Pilates method is a system of exercises developed by the legendary Joseph Pilates. It is designed to exercise the entire body. It emphasises complete coordination of the body and mind and the correct balance between strength, suppleness and control.
Romana Kryzanowska is the protégé of Joseph Pilates and has been teaching the method for almost 60 years! Romana first met Joseph when he treated her for an ankle injury. As a dancer she soon realised his method strengthened more than just her ankle.
Joseph Pilates was born in Mönchengladbach, Germany, in 1883. He was a very fragile child, who suffered from several illnesses in his early years, but having a strong mind helped him recover and this would become one of his guiding principles: mens sana, corpore sano. His mother's interest in alternative health therapies and his father's passion for sports would also be of great influence on him.
